That makes sense indeed.

Sorry, Willempie, I missed the wink.

MNb,

To paraphrase someone else, Anand is in the thick of the race to win the tournament.  Topalov has already won the exhibition!

Anand isn't underperforming by much, there's just no comparing what Topalov is doing to any "normal" 2750+ performance!

Easy to say now, isn't it Willempie? Had you predicted this Topalov onslaught? I had expected a rat race between Anand and Topa. Even now I do not really understand why Anand went wrong.

It is beginning to look like this thread is showing a major lack of insight in strengths of certain players. It seems that certain people here like Kasparov rank Anand higher than Topalov Shocked

You answered your own question, BK.  There was no need for a tournament when Fischer resigned the throne because a match-play tournament had just taken place to determine the best challenger to the throne.  As a result, the Candidates Match between Karpov and Korchnoi, 1974, is sometimes considered a de facto World Championship match.

Karpov was indeed the most active world champion up to his day, then Kasparov eclipsed him.  Not to worry though.... If Kasparov stays retired, Karpov could catch back up again!  But will it count since he's no longer world champ?

Karpov more or less had to be the most active world champion as he didnt earn his title in a match but by default. So he had to prove he was the best of the best.

Why not play a tournament like after alekhine died to get a new WC. Fischer didnt die but refused to play.

One might even say, that Karpov was the most active WCh ever. Saying that his list of tournament wins is impressive is not strong enough. Some reporter asked him around 1984, what his worst result of the last x years was. The answer: 4th at some USSR championship.
I pity those, who are too young to have followed the several K-K matches.

Yeah, woofwoof.

We have lived through the
Golden Age of Chess
which was also the Kasparov Era.  Apart from the petty politics, there has never been so many top-class tournaments with the very best players in the world fighting it out against each other seemingly every month.  Chess theory (and I don't mean opening theory) has leapt far ahead of where it was even when Karpov was champion.  Karpov does deserve part of the credit though, he was the most active world champion until Kasparov took over.

In recent years, that would be true. Perhaps not so during the 80's & 90's. Even after losing to GK, Karpov was still the dominant one within the FIDE circle.

Things started to even out during the mid 90's or so with the emergence of so many young stars coinciding with the gradual decline of Karpov.

My choice would be either Vishy Anand or Vasily Ivanchuk.

But on a separate note..................Nigel Short would have been world champ if there had been no Kasparov, as he beat Karpov in the Candidates.

Before we have a glut of responses pointing this out, I fully agree that there are many others who could have been champ with GK out of the way Cheesy

Hi all!

After several comments that Alexei Shirov should not be on the list, and David Bronstein should, I made the necessary change so you can now actually vote for Bronstein!
